On one of the coldest days of the year, I put on some stripy pyjamas, kicked off my boots and stood on a plinth in the centre of Hobart for a couple of hours. The vigil replicated a roll call in Auschwitz where inmates were ordered to remain standing in appalling weather, however sick or starving there were. For a week prior to the vigil, I ate Auschwitz rations of thin gruel, rye bread and chicory coffee.
